Training for Psychotherapists, Counsellors and other Helping Professionals:
Experiential training to explore ways to prevent and overcome burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.
Training with a difference!
Saturday 7th October 2023
10 am - 5 pm
National Trust Footprint, Windermere
We’ve created this training day retreat specifically for Psychotherapists / Counsellors and other Helping Professionals because:
We know the stresses and strains that go with supporting the emotional and physical well-being of others in our day-to-day work.
We know that we find it hard to carve out time to take care of ourselves when there’s so much ‘adulting’ to do.
We know that our core training doesn’t focus on us, as practitioners, taking care of ourselves… so we don’t always know what to do or when!
We know that compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, hypervigilance/anxiety, and burnout are clear-and-present dangers associated with our work.
We know that we all need some time to actually learn, discuss and support each other, with no other demands on our time.
And that’s why you need this day retreat! It is a training with a difference. It will be mostly experiential with no PowerPoint presentations or sitting on uncomfortable chairs for hours. Instead, for most of the day we shall be practicing ways to experience rest, strength, joy, and calm.
It’s only one day… and we know that it will have an impact on the way you look after yourself from now on; and that you’ll learn things that you can also pass on to the clients you work with. Win-win!
We specialise in teaching and supporting therapists in practices that maintain wellness. We both have a keen interest in how we take care of ourselves; and pass these insights, knowledge, practices, and support on to other practitioners; whether you’re working for an organisation or in private practice.
The day will comprise teaching, discussions, experiences, and practices so that you come away feeling refreshed, nourished (cake included!), and confident in your self-care methods. We’ll share knowledge around compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, burnout, and the potential hypervigilance & anxieties we carry through our work.
We aim to give you strategies towards incorporating simple wellness practices into your daily work and home life…. Surrounded by the wild beauty of our superb location in Windermere.
Our venue is the beautiful National Trust Footprint. A private woodland with a beautiful and cosy straw bale building, situated on the outskirts of Windermere in the South Lake District. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the building bring nature connection whilst indoors and the woodland is rich with a variety of native trees, plants, and animals.

Workshop Host: Nes
I am an accredited UKCP and MBACP psychotherapeutic counsellor, working with adults, children and adolescents. I am an ecotherapist, well-being coach, yoga therapist, forest school leader, mountain leader, a UKCP accredited psychotherapeutic counsellor, and am trained in somatic trauma therapy. I have vast experience of facilitating groups and workshops in nature.
I have experience of working in a variety of settings as a therapist, I’ve worked for the NHS in GP practices and CAMHS as well as a sexual violence charity, schools, and in private practice.
Prior to training in psychotherapy, I worked as a primary school teacher, youth worker, mountain leader, yoga teacher, forest schools leader, as well as running an award-winning bicycle project, teaching people to build and recycle bicycles.
I have personal experience of burnout and chronic fatigue which has meant that self-care and developing a personalised toolbox that I regularly review and update has been a priority for me. I strongly believe in an individualised approach, there is no one-size-fits-all-approach, and share a diverse range of tools to nourish and nurture the different parts of us.
I am a co-author, with Babette Rothschild, of 8 Keys to Safe Trauma Recovery Workbook and soon-to-be-released Wild and Wellbeing Card Deck.
I live in the Lake District and enjoy walking, growing and eating veggies, dog cuddling, and cycling.
Workshop Host: Emma
I'm Emma, a counsellor / psychotherapist with my own private practice - www.INeedTherapy.co.uk . I work online with clients across the UK, Europe and beyond, who are experiencing depression, stress, anxiety, and the general pressures of modern-day living. I also work with parents who have not had their baby delivered to term; as well as new mothers who need support during their transition into parenting.
I specialise in working with people who have experienced trauma and PTSD - to help them resolve the emotional, physical and behavioural effects of the trauma they have experienced in the past, or more recently. I first met Nes when we were students of Babette Rothschild on her specialist Somatic Trauma Therapy training course; where we both progressed to assisting Babette on the course in training other therapists.
Through my own experiences and my client work, I have a keen interest in how we take care of ourselves while living, working and 'adulting'. I incorporate wellness into my daily practice and work with my clients to support them in learning and incorporating wellness practices into their daily lives. Nes and I have a common interest in working with other therapists and people in helping professions to support them in the avoidance of professional burnout. Together, we specialise in teaching and supporting therapists in practices that maintain wellness through our one- and two-day retreats across the country.
